Carolina Cold Storage expects to save about $50,000 this year
When the electric bill jumped more than 10 percent in one month, Division Manager Marty Gaddy know he had to do something. At Carolina Cold Storage, that jump meant an additional $6,000 on a typical monthly bill of $50,000.
Relief came when Gaddy called the local utility company asking for help and was referred to Jim Parker, director of Energy and Facility Management with the Industrial Extension Service at NC State University. Parker spent six hours surveying the plant, where tons of pork from the Smithfield plant next door are blast frozen every day – a process requiring a great deal of electricity. He made recommendations that will save the company enough in energy costs to cover a month’s electric bill.
Energy surveys are only one of the services offered by the Industrial Extension Service. More than 1,000 North Carolina businesses last year came to IES to train for quality certification, to implement Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma, or to learn how to be both environmentally friendly and profitable.
These companies reported last year $93 million in economic impact from IES services. Profits grew and jobs were saved. With IES offices throughout North Carolina, we can help your business, too.
