Companies can no longer be content with OSHA compliance as the cornerstone for their health and safety programs. Developing a safety culture is critical for companies interested in maximizing employee health and safety. Achieving safety excellence requires moving beyond the traditional focus of OSHA regulations and engineering. Safety excellence can only be achieved by emphasizing the human dimensions of safety and by reducing the unsafe behaviors that can cause injuries. This workshop will provide an overview of behavior-based safety programs and other key components required for developing a total safety culture.

Wendy Laing, CSP, is an environmental, health and safety extension specialist with NCSU Industrial Extension Service. Ms. Laing provides safety and environmental assistance to industry in North Carolina, focusing beyond regulatory compliance and encouraging employers to implement effective management systems. Ms. Laing develops and presents safety and environmental continuing education courses, and serves as the coordinator of the MESH (Manager of Environmental Safety and Health) Certificate Program at IES. She implemented a behavior-based safety program at her previous employer.
David Machles, EdD, MPH, COHN-S, is co-founder of Dimensions in Occupational Safety and Health. David has worked in occupational health since 1987 and has presented on a variety of health and safety topics locally, statewide and nationally. He has assisted companies in developing and coordinating safety and health committees and conducting in-depth safety needs assessments for hazard identification and control. David's areas of focus include assessing the cultural aspects of an organization's safety program, instructional program design and evaluating the effectiveness of safety programs.
