About This Event:

This workshop covers the concepts of ISO 14001 and helps you acquire the skills to conduct a successful internal audit of an environmental management system (EMS). Exercises include a fully simulated audit under the guidance of a certified Plexus Trainer. When the workshop is delivered on-site, an audit of your company’s system is included.

Internal auditors for ISO 14001, representatives from key functional groups, members of ISO 14001 implementation teams and anyone interested in learning about ISO 14001.

Understand the practical application of your EMS and how it relates to the intent of the ISO 14001 standard
Gain confidence in your audit skills -- from planning through reporting the results
Get real-life experience working as a member of a functioning audit team during the workshop

Topics Covered Include:

A review of the standards for thorough understanding, as well as a discussion of each clause
Definition and use of the basic EMS terminology
Participation in exercises to better understand the purpose and role of the internal EMS auditor
Learning and practicing effective communication skills and techniques, including effective questioning and conflict management
Planning, preparing and performing an internal EMS audit.

"Understanding ISO 14001" is not a prerequisite for this workshop.
Instructor(s):

Charlie Parrish, P.E., is an Environmental Engineering Specialist with the Industrial Extension Service (IES) at North Carolina State University. Mr. Parrish works with the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) group conducting assistance programs on ISO 14001. He has completed ISO 14001 Lead Auditor training and Plexus Trainer Coach certification. In addition to teaching the ISO 14001 overview course, Mr. Parrish has assisted several companies with developing an EMS and acquiring ISO 14001 registration.
Mr. Parrish also teaches Environmental Engineering PE Review, Air Quality, Stack Testing, Environmental Permits, Intro to Environmental Regulations, and other courses. He has conducted on-site projects for NC manufacturers on waste minimization assessments, air quality permitting, storm water permitting, aquatic toxicity investigations, RMP/PSM applicability, Safety Training, TSCA Compliance, and others.
Mr. Parrish holds a master's degree in environmental engineering (1989) from Virginia Tech University and a bachelor's degree in Biology (1978) from San Diego State University.
