DOE Steam System and End User Training

About This Event:

The BestPractices Steam System and End User Workshop covers the operation of typical steam systems and discusses methods of system efficiency improvement. The course introduces the major steam opportunity assessment tools developed and utilized by BestPractices Steam. The major text for the End User workshop is the "Steam System Survey Guide," a technical reference document developed by BestPractices Steam.

Recommended For:

End users - energy managers, steam system supervisors, engineers and operations level workers - who have steam system responsibilities in industrial, government, institutional and large commercial sites.

Topics Covered Include:

Bullet for list image Steam generation efficiency - the boiler and obtaining optimum steam generation efficiency
Bullet for list image Resource utilization effectiveness - basic concepts of combined heat and power systems
Bullet for list image Steam distribution system losses - possible major sources of loss in a system include steam leaks, heat transfer loss through insulation and condensate loss.

Additional Information:

You will be provided with a copy of the Steam System Scoping Tool (SSST). The End User workshop also introduces the Steam System Assessment Tool (SSAT). A number of the course examples are presented using the SSAT. Finally, the workshop introduces the 3E Plus insulation appraisal software and a course example that uses this software is presented.

Instructor(s):

Stephen Terry, Ph.D., is an extension specialist with the North Carolina State University Industrial Assessment Center, a U.S. Department of Energy funded program. As part of that program he has worked with small and medium size manufacturing plants in and around North Carolina since 1992, helping them reduce energy costs and increasing energy efficiency. He also teaches several energy-related courses in the Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments at NC State University.
