5S Visual Systems / Standardized Work

1 day(s) , 7 instructional hours
7 Engineering Professional Development Hours (PDHs)

About This Event:

Lean manufacturing makes it possible for workers to produce high-quality products quickly and consistently. The 5S Visual Systems approach gives workers exactly what they need to perform each specific task -- and gives them a renewed sense of pride in their workplace and individual performance. Standardized Work is the foundation for building your future success, as it ensures consistent results and establishes a baseline for future improvement. As Taiichi Ohno, one of the pioneers of lean manufacturing, said, "Where there is no standard, there can be no kaizen" -- that is, no improvement. These back-to-back workshops provide in-depth instruction in two vital elements of lean operations and continuous improvement.

Recommended For:

These workshops are recommended for the people who designed your front-line production systems and the people with the authority to improve them. That may be your CEO or general manager, but more likely it will be a plant manager or production engineer. Regardless, we recommend they bring along a shop foreman and several line workers, since they're more likely to know how your systems really work -- as opposed to how they're supposed to work or how you think they work.

You Will:

Bullet for list image Become familiar with the 5S system and the importance of each element
Bullet for list image Learn how to create a visual management system in your workplace
Bullet for list image Develop a process to quickly involve employees in improvement activity and increase employee morale
Bullet for list image Review the elements of standardized work: takt time, work sequence, and work-in-process
Bullet for list image Learn how to develop a process that eliminates walking, reduces waste and improves quality and productivity.

Topics Covered Include:

5S Visual Systems:
Bullet for list image SORT through what you have and remove what you don't need.
Bullet for list image STRAIGHTEN what remains, making space visual and self-explanatory.
Bullet for list image SHINE up tools, equipment and work spaces, keeping them spotless.
Bullet for list image STANDARDIZE and follow work rules scrupulously.
Bullet for list image SUSTAIN by maintaining the discipline in 5S.

ELEMENTS OF STANDARDIZED WORK
Bullet for list image Takt time (vs. cycle time)
Bullet for list image Work sequence
Bullet for list image Work in process

TOOLS of STANDARDIZED WORK:
Bullet for list image Time observation sheet
Bullet for list image Standard work combination sheet
Bullet for list image Standard work layout
Bullet for list image Cycle time bar chart
Bullet for list image Work instruction sheet.

Instructor(s):

Our lean delivery team features experts with a combined 100 years of experience in a variety of industrial and commercial settings. Any of them are capable of teaching these two workshops; if you opt to have 5S Visual Systems and Standardized Work taught at your specific site, we will try to match you with someone with experience in a business like yours.
