DOE Pumping System Assessment Tool (PSAT) Specialist Qualification Workshop

3 day(s) , 16 instructional hours

About This Event:

This workshop provides a discussion of energy efficiency factors for pumping systems with an emphasis on considering the system instead of components only. Methods for identifying and quantifying energy reduction opportunities, using US Department of Energy-recommended software and practices, are discussed.

Recommended For:

Plant operators and engineers, consulting engineers, pump suppliers. This is an intensive course; prior working experience with pumps and fluid systems is strongly encouraged.

You Will:

Bullet for list image Identify pumping systems that warrant detailed measurements to quantify savings potential
Bullet for list image Understand the performance characteristics of pumps, induction motors, adjustable speed drives and fluid systems
Bullet for list image Understand how pumps, motors, and systems interact with each other
Bullet for list image Be able to use the Pumping System Assessment Tool to evaluate existing pumping systems and compare them with optimized equipment
Bullet for list image Be able to convert field measured data, including motor current or power, pressures, and flow rates into motor and pump efficiency estimates
Bullet for list image Be familiar with good practices and common pitfalls related to fluid and electrical measurements.

Topics Covered Include:

Bullet for list image Motor system asset management
Bullet for list image Fluid system characteristics, including fundamental fluid relationships, static and dynamic head, and sources of friction
Bullet for list image Overview of pump performance characteristics
Bullet for list image Motor performance
Bullet for list image Overview of motor types and auxiliaries
Bullet for list image Adjustable speed drive types and performance
Bullet for list image PWM drive issues
Bullet for list image Pump selection in ASD applications
Bullet for list image Introduction to PSAT and PSAT supporting tools
Bullet for list image Factors that can result in poor PSAT ratings
Bullet for list image Valve characteristics
Bullet for list image Developing a system performance curve from field measurements
Bullet for list image System and pump head exercises
Bullet for list image Pressure, flow rate and speed measurements - instruments and misc. considerations
Bullet for list image Electrical measurements - current, voltage, power
Bullet for list image Data estimating when direct measurements are not available
Bullet for list image Distinguishing measurements and requirements.

Instructor(s):

Don Casada is Consulting Engineer with Diagnostic Solutions, LLC in Knoxville, Tennessee. He provides engineering consulting services to a variety of organizations, including national laboratories, electric utilities and cooperatives, water and wastewater facilities, and other engineering firms. Mr. Casada holds six patents on rotating machinery and valve diagnostic methods. He has authored several computer programs that are used in commercial and educational applications and is the author of a software program distributed by the U.S. Department of Energy's Pumping System Assessment Tool.

Mr. Casada is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of North Carolina, is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Water Works Association, and has served on several committees in these organizations. He received his bachelor's in nuclear engineering and master's of mechanical engineering degrees at North Carolina State University.
