OHSAS 18001 Internal Auditor Training

About This Event:

This workshop covers the concepts of OHSAS 18001 and helps you acquire the skills to conduct a successful internal audit of an Occupational Health and Safety Management system (OHSMS). Day 1 covers the OHSAS 18001 standard in depth. Examples of how companies implement the standard are given. Day 2 covers auditing skills. Exercises include a fully simulated audit as well as identification of proper implementation of an OHSMS.

NOTE: Students do not have to register for the Understanding OHSAS 18001 as a prerequisite for this class.

Internal auditors for OHSAS 18001, representatives from key functional groups, members of OHSAS 18001 implementation teams and anyone interested in learning about OHSAS 18001.

Bullet for list image Participation in exercises to better understand the purpose and role of the internal OHSMS auditor
Bullet for list image Learning and practicing effective communication skills and techniques, including effective questioning and conflict management
Bullet for list image Planning, preparing and performing an internal OHSMS audit.

Additional Information:

"Understanding ISO 18001" is not a prerequisite for this workshop AND should not be registered for simultaneously.

Instructor(s):

Ms. Wendy Laing and Mr. Charlie Parrish will teach this course.

W.W. Laing, CSP, EHS Extension Specialist: Serving as the Product Leader for the EHS Group at IES, Ms. Laing has over 17 years of engineering and safety experience. She has a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University and is a Certified Safety Professional. Ms. Laing has served as a facility safety manager for two manufacturing locations in North Carolina. She has developed, coordinated, and promoted safety and environmental programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. In addition, Ms. Laing has provided numerous training courses to promote and educate employees and management about safety. Ms. Laing is the former president and current member of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers for 2003-2004. She served 5 years on the Board of Directors for the Central Carolina Occupational Safety and Health School, an annual regional training event cosponsored by ASSE and NC OSH. Wendy has assisted in the instruction of OTI courses taught at NCSU IES on behalf of Georgia Tech.

Charlie Parrish, P.E., is an Environmental Engineering Specialist with the Industrial Extension Service (IES) at North Carolina State University. Mr. Parrish works with the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) group conducting assistance programs on ISO 14001. He has completed ISO 14001 Lead Auditor training and Plexus Trainer Coach certification. In addition to teaching the ISO 14001 overview course, Mr. Parrish has assisted several companies with developing an EMS and acquiring ISO 14001 registration.

Mr. Parrish also teaches Environmental Engineering PE Review, Air Quality, Stack Testing, Environmental Permits, Intro to Environmental Regulations, and other courses. He has conducted on-site projects for NC manufacturers on waste minimization assessments, air quality permitting, storm water permitting, aquatic toxicity investigations, RMP/PSM applicability, Safety Training, TSCA Compliance, and others.

Mr. Parrish holds a master's degree in environmental engineering (1989) from Virginia Tech University and a bachelor's degree in Biology (1978) from San Diego State University.
