Safety & Health Management Systems for Small Businesses Overviews

- Lesson 1 Overview:
- Title: Introduction to Safety & Health Management Systems
- You will learn about the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and your company's need to comply with OSHA requirements. You will learn what a safety and health management system (SHMS) is and benefits of implementing one. You will be introduced to widely recognized occupational SHMS specifications.
- Lesson 2 Overview:
- Title: Management Leadership
- Management leadership is a critical component of your safety and health management system. In this lesson, you will learn about the five main elements of management leadership: (1) safety and health (S & H) policy; (2) management commitment; (3) employee participation; (4) setting goals and objectives; and (5) management review.
- Lesson 3 Overview:
- Title: Worksite Analysis
- You will learn about these four methods of worksite analysis: (1) accident investigation; (2) routine self-inspections;

- Lesson 4 Overview:
- Title: Hazard Prevention and Control
- You will learn about different types of hazard controls, preventive maintenance and managing change, emergency planning, occupational health programs, and contractor safety. These topics describe systematic approaches to preventing and controlling identified hazards. This lesson also revisits the process of management review.
- Lesson 5 Overview:
- Title: Safety and Health Training
- You will learn how to: (1) identify your company’s training needs and OSHA training requirements; (2) create a training matrix; (3) promote transfer of training into the workplace; and (4) recognize the characteristics of effective training. You will also learn about different types of training as well as the importance of maintaining training records and documentation.
- Lesson 6 Overview:
- Title: Post-Assessment
- You will run again the Gap Analysis Tool, introduced in Lesson 1, to mark how much progress you have made toward implementing an SHMS at your company.
