Sigma is a statistical measure of variability. In a service or manufacturing environment, a Six Sigma process would mean that the process is virtually defect free. In a million operations of a process, Six Sigma would allow only 3.4 defects. Most companies operate at 4 Sigma which allows 6,000 defects per million operations of a process. Motorola set out to reduce the number of defects in its own products in the 1980s and called the process Six Sigma. Dr. A. Blanton Godfrey is Dean and Joseph D. Moore Professor of Textile and Apparel Management Technology, College of Textiles, North Carolina State University. He has acquired a national reputation for his expertise in quality, especially improving quality in the healthcare delivery system. Prior to joining North Carolina State University on July 1, 2000, Dr. Godfrey was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Juran Institute, Incorporated, the leading international management consulting, research, and training organization focused on quality management and business excellence, a position he held for 13 years.
Dr. Godfrey has published numerous articles and co-authored five books on quality control and improvement. He is founding editor of Six Sigma Forum Magazine and directs the Six Sigma effort at NC State University which trains and provides professional services to hundreds of manufacturing and service organizations annually.
