MESH FAQs

Q. What Does MESH Stand For?
Manager of Environmental, Safety and Health Certificate.

Q. How Does the Program Work?
Earning the certificate requires no specific educational background nor previous training. Individuals begin by submitting an application; they then complete a required core course and elective courses. The certificate is awarded after successful completion of a core course and 70 elective hours. Courses are offered by North Carolina State University, the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Department of Labor.

Q. Which courses may I apply to the MESH Certificate Program?
Environmental, health and safety continuing education programs offered by North Carolina State University, the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Department of Labor receive MESH credit. In addition, a maximum of 10 hours of credit may be earned by attending the Statewide Safety Conference, the Regional Safety Schools, OR the North Carolina Safety Congress. Up to 25 hours of credit may be obtained through courses taught by other providers if approved by the MESH board. MESH participants must show proof of attendance and subject matter covered in the course in order to receive MESH credit from outside providers. A listing of current MESH courses is available from the three sponsors. This list will expand as the sponsors develop new courses. Be sure to look for the MESH Certificate logo on publications from North Carolina State University, the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina, and the North Carolina Department of Labor to indicate courses that apply to the series.

Q. How far back can you go for training to still count?
Training can be counted for MESH credit up to five years.

Q. What is the cost?
Aside from the course tuition, the only cost of the MESH Certificate Program is a $99 filing fee that you submit upon completing the 100 required credit hours. The fee covers the MESH Program administrative cost and the delivery of the MESH plaque.

Q. How can I be accepted into the program?
Complete the on-line application on the IES website at www.ies.ncsu.edu/mesh. Upon submission of your application, you will receive a confirmation e-mail.

Q. How soon can I complete this program?
Please refer to individual course descriptions for dates and locations. Courses are offered year round -- some are offered several times each year and some are offered at multiple locations.

Q. Who keeps a record of which courses I took?
Upon receipt of your application the Industrial Extension Service will send you a Course Roster. As you complete courses you will document your progress using the Course Roster or by maintaining the course certificate of attendance. At the end of each course you will either have the course instructor sign your course roster to verify your attendance, or maintain your course certificate of attendance.

Q. What happens when I have completed all of the necessary hours?
You will submit your Course Roster and/or copies of your course certificates of attendance, and your $99 filing fee. The Industrial Extension Service will verify your attendance records. Upon verification your framed MESH Certificate will be sent directly to you. We give you an opportunity to give us your supervisor’s name and address so we may mail a letter to that individual describing your accomplishments. We will also prepare a press release that you may send to your company’s newsletter or local media.

MESH Sponsors

The Manager of Environment, Safety, and Health Certificate Series does not certify that an individual is qualified to practice in a particular area. The series sponsors recognize that is the responsibility of professional organizations formed to set and maintain such standards. These professional organizations usually require individuals to meet specific academic and experience requirements and to achieve a passing mark on written and oral examinations. The Certificate Series is designed to serve individuals needing to maintain existing credentials or individuals who find themselves responsible for environmental, safety or health management but who may not have the degrees or extensive experience in that area.
