24-Hour Hazardous Materials Technician for Emergency Response

About This Course:

This course meets OSHA training requirements for hazardous materials technicians (individuals who respond to releases or potential releases for the purpose of stopping the release) as stipulated in 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii) and 29 CFR 1926.65 (q)(6)(iii).

 

Recommended for: 

Personnel such as workers and supervisors; security, emergency coordinators, and safety professionals who are currently on or are planning to join a hazardous materials team for the purpose of responding to hazardous substance releases and spills.

 

Participants Will: 

  • Receive training required by 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii) and 29 CFR 1926.65(q)(6)(iii) to be designated as hazardous materials technicians
  • Employ critical thinking skills and demonstrate practical abilities in regard to hazardous materials emergency response settings

 

Topics include:

  • Hazard awareness, recognition, and identification
  • Hazard and risk assessment
  • Site safety and control
  • Medical monitoring
  • Selection and use of personal protective equipment
  • Monitoring and sampling equipment
  • Confinement and control of hazardous materials leaks, spills, and releases
  • Decontamination procedures
  • Use of the Incident Command System
  • Emergency response planning

 

Additional Information:

During some exercises, participants may wear chemical protective clothing that may lead to stressful situations for certain individuals.  The wearing of chemical protective clothing is not required, however full attendance in the class is required for successful course completion. Individuals who are not currently participating in a medical surveillance program should consult their physician before attending this course.  Attendees may also bring their own or company personal protective equipment if they prefer (e.g. air purifying respirators or self-contained breathing apparatus; chemical protective clothing, boots, and/or gloves).
