2020 sounds so futuristic and when you think about it, technology has come a long way from what it was 30 years ago. We have Amazon’s Alexa to help us control our home’s electronics, and touch screen tablets that were only figments of sci-fi imagination 30 years ago. We also have useful apps that can not only help you in everyday life but on the jobs as well. The Light Meter, Harness Hero and NIOSH Sound Level Meter Apps are perfect tools to help stay safe on the job.

OSHA requires construction worksites to have a minimum level of illumination. This is where the Light Meter app can come in handy. The free Light Meter App measures the amount of light in an area using your phone’s camera. The app includes a camera meter, a sensor meter, Sunny Sixteen calculator, Depth of Field Calculator and an EXIF Reader. The app has been tested accurately against commercial light meters like Gossen and Sekonic.

Harness Hero is a great learning tool if you’re looking to train new employees whose jobs involve safety harnesses. The fun and interactive app gives the player real-life scenarios to help them memorize their way around a harness like: where to anchor the harness, what anchorage device to use, how to set up a harness, what connection device to use and more. The simulation also lets players inspect the harness equipment for issues, such as burns, rips, rust or other defects. If the player doesn’t set up their harness correctly, it could end in their character’s injury or death.

The Centers of Disease Control estimates that 22 million workers are exposed to potentially damaging noise at work each year. There’s an award-winning app that can help you monitor the level of noise you work around. NIOSH Sound Level Meter tracks noise that’s considered hazardous, teaches you how to conduct a noise measurement, how to properly select hearing protection and provides guidelines on how to prevent hearing loss. The app was developed by professional audio engineers hearing loss experts to optimize efficiency.
