Kings Mountain, NC textile company and NC State Industry Expansion Solutions (IES) client STI Fabrics have found relief for their labor shortages by hiring men incarcerated at a local prison. The company pays these inmates the same wage as other entry-level workers and has hired 72 inmates to work at the plant, some of whom have stayed with the company after their release. While some employees were initially skeptical of the program, they have come to appreciate the dedication and hard work of the inmate workers. STI Fabrics won the 2022 NCMEP Leadership Award for Workforce because of this innovative initiative. The program has proven worthwhile for the company, and they hope to give these inmates hope for the future.
