To help you prepare for the Professional Engineering License Exam, NC State University has created a series of six (6) online review sessions designed to acquaint you with the fundamental knowledge, concepts and equations you will need to pass the Environmental PE Exam.

These sessions were developed from a series of Environmental PE Exam Review seminars held on NC State’s Centennial Campus, and updated in 2009.

 

Duration:
This online review is in three modules, approximately 18 hours total in length. This represents the estimated time to complete the online course, including exercises.  However, actual times will vary from user to user.

 

Modules 1 and 2: WATER TREATMENT OPERATIONS AND PROCESSES
These modules focus on:
  • Basic chemical concepts
  • Water quality parameters and standards
  • Overview of water treatment
  • Coagulation and flocculation
  • Softening and sedimentation
  • Filtration and disinfection
Significant review time is devoted to problem-solving techniques for the exam.

 

Instructor:
Dr. Richard O. Mines, Jr., PE is Director of MSE/MS Programs and Professor of Environmental Engineering, Mercer University, School of Engineering. Dr. Mines is also Professor and Program Director of Environmental Engineering at the Mercer University Department of Biomedical & Environmental Engineering.

 

Module 3: WASTEWATER SYSTEMS
This module focuses on:
  • Wastewater treatment and treatment standards
  • System components
  • Loading factors
  • Influent
  • Flow diagrams
  • Clarifiers, filtration, disinfection & sludge
  • Dewatering
  • Mass balance
  • Kinetics of biological growth
Also reviewed is water quality modeling including reactor dynamics, CSTR & PFR reactors, activated sludge, trickling, BOD, Streeter-Phelps Equation, oxygen sag, aeration, oxidation, and rotating biological contactors.

 

Exam-taking tips are also discussed and numerous practice problems are worked, as well.

 

Instructor:
Victor A. D’Amato, PE has 13 years of environmental engineering experience, focused on water, wastewater, and storm water treatment, surface and groundwater protection, site remediation, and development and evaluation of innovative environmental technologies.

 

Our third online review module of three is taught in three parts:

 

Module 4: SOLID WASTE AND HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SYSTEMS
Instructed by Charlie Parrish, PE, an Environmental Engineering Specialist for NC State University’s Industrial Extension Service. Since joining IES in July of 1998, Mr. Parrish has assisted manufacturers in environmental areas including ISO 14001 assistance, air quality permitting, environmental compliance auditing, emissions testing, TSCA compliance, water quality assessments, industrial waste minimization assessments, energy surveys, and health and safety assessments & training.

 

This module also includes an overview of regulations, solid waste management, land filling, incineration, and hazardous waste treatment and remediation.

 

Module 5: AIR QUALITY SYSTEMS
Instructed by Charlie Parrish, PE, this module covers air flow, ideal gas law, indoor air quality, stationary source, mobile source, and control technologies.

 

Module 6: PUBLIC HEALTH & SAFETY
Instructed by Wendy Laing, CSP, MIE is the Director of the Southeastern OSHA Training Institute and Professional Learning at NC State University’s Industrial Extension Service. Ms. Laing provides safety and environmental assistance to industry, focusing beyond regulatory compliance and encouraging employers to implement effective management systems..

 

This module also focuses on industrial hygiene, emergency plans, epidemiology, toxicology and radiation protection.
