RALEIGH, N.C. – The Southeastern OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC), administered by the North Carolina State University Industrial Extension Service (IES), today announced the launch of a new, 8-hour HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations) course that can be completed entirely online.

OSHA requires all employees who work in hazardous waste and emergency response operations to take an annual 8-hour HAZWOPER refresher course focusing on recognizing and avoiding common physical and chemical industrial hazards. The online course, developed by Southeastern OTIEC, applies to a wide range of workers, including those in cleanup operations at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites and EPA-licensed waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities, and emergency personnel responding to scenarios involving hazardous materials.

By offering the course online, the Southeastern OTIEC aims to make the annual refresher process easier and more affordable for these workers.

“Students are able to learn at their own pace, at times that are convenient for them,” says Southeastern OTIEC Director Wendy Laing. “Offering this course online gives workers a new level of flexibility in satisfying OSHA requirements, and makes it easier for them to keep themselves and their fellow workers safe around hazardous materials.” The online course also awards students eight hours of credit toward a Manager of Environmental Safety and Health Program Certificate upon its successful completion. The course is available immediately in REPORTER.
