Do you provide fire extinguishers in the workplace for employee use or designate employees who will use fire extinguishers in the workplace? You don’t want to be caught unprepared if a fire breaks out at the office or facility. That’s why it’s important to train regularly and equip yourself with the proper equipment.

OSHA requires that you provide an educational program to familiarize employees with fire extinguisher use and the dangers of incipient stage fire fighting.

The Fire Extinguisher Training Course offered by North Carolina State University Industry Expansion Solutions fulfills the mandatory OSHA training requirements and consists of classroom instruction followed by hands-on participation to put into practical use the concepts learned in the classroom by utilizing a state of the art simulator to extinguish a simulated fire.

Length of Course

Classroom – 1 hour

Practical – Varies per number of participants (Average 4 – 5 minutes per participant)

Following completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the different types and classes of fuels/fires
  • Identify the different classes of fire extinguishers
  • Describe the fire extinguisher rating system

Class Description

The classroom course begins with a discussion on fire behavior and the different types and classes of fuels/fires. Specific information on fire extinguishers is covered including the classes of extinguishers, fire extinguisher rating system, limitations of fire extinguishers, and the proper selection of fire extinguishers in relation to the class of fuel/fire encountered. Additional topics include OSHA’s Standard on Portable Fire Extinguishers (29 CFR 1910.157) and interfacing with emergency responders at fire-related incidents.

The practical portion of the course includes a demonstration of the proper method of using an extinguisher to extinguish a fire. Each participant will extinguish a simulated fire using an extinguisher and a digital fire simulator.

The Fire Extinguisher Training course meets the requirements stated in 29 CFR 1910.157(g)(1) related to the education of employees where the employer has provided extinguishers in the workplace for employee use and 29 CFR 1910.157(g)(3) for the training of employees who have been designated to use extinguishers in the workplace.
