It was great to hear and see manufacturing in North Carolina! On Thursday, Feb 11th, I went to the Wirthwein manufacturing facility in New Bern, NC, with the regional manager serving eastern North Carolina for NC State Industry Expansion Solutions, Alex Easley. We met up with Tony Koonce, who has been the quality/environmental manager with the New Bern Wirthwein facility for 19 years.

Established in 2003, the German-based manufacturer, Wirthwein produces plastic-based components, assemblies and systems for innovative vital industries while maintaining toolmaking, injection molding, blow molding and assembly technologies. Wirthwein is a global company with 22 locations and more than 3,500 employees in Europe, Asia, and North America.

During our visit, Tony provided us with a plant tour. The facility was well organized and what was most impressive was how clean the plant was. We got to see firsthand some automation and several machines running and producing products for sub-components. NC State Industry Expansion Solutions recently completed an ISO 14001 project at this facility.

ISO, otherwise known as the International Organization for Standardization, is an international standard-setting body composed of representatives from various national standards organizations. An organization meeting these standards allows them to maintain consistency and continuous improvement that keeps their organization growing and their customer satisfaction high. ISO 14001, in particular, is geared toward helping organizations maintain the compliance of their Environmental Management System. IES experts coach and support clients through the certification process, with training tailored to each company’s unique needs. Like Wirthwein, we can assist you toward certification for ISO 14001, IATF 16949, AS 9100 and several other industry-specific management system standards.
